Senior Fitness

SENIOR CHAIR AEROBICS
New, fun and challenging chair fitness class. Please bring water and towel. Exercise bands provided 

SENIOR AEROBICS
Exercise your body and mind through a variety of aerobic moves specialized for seniors. Fun, easy to learn, yet stimulating. Popular! Class fills quickly. 

WALKING TO FITNESS for SENIORS
The most basic aerobic activity of walking. Limited to 60 students. 

WORKOUTS (INDIVIDUAL)
Cardiovascular exercise performed on recumbent cycles and treadmills. Resistant exercises (weight training) taught to help prevent osteoporosis and increase metabolism. (Taught by Exercise Physiologists)

ABC FITNESS BOOT CAMP
If you want to lose weight and feel great, this class is for you!  Class is designed to jump start your metabolism and burn fat fast.  All abilities welcome.  you will be challenged at your level.

BODY WORKOUTS - STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY (FORMERLY YOGA)
Enjoy and practice the basic discipline and postures to promote physical fitness.  Improve flexibility, strength, and concentration.  Renew your energy, restore emotional stability, and learn how to reduce stress and social anxiety.

BODY WORKOUTS - STRENGTHENING CORE MUSCLES (FORMERLY PILATES)
This beginning level class focuses on specific exercises designed to strengthen the core stabilizer muscles.  The benefits associated with stronger stabilizer muscles include:  improved posture, pelvic stability, spinal mobility and stronger abdominal muscles.  Please bring mat, towel and water.

CARDIO KICKBOXING
Have you heard about the new craze of Tai Bo? Cardio Kickboxing is a fun new way to exercise. Learn many different punches along with different kicking formats to provide you with a complete body workout. Tone and strengthen muscles as well as burn calories.

DANCERCIZE
Shape up with the most popular dances. This energetic class will improve your coordination, balance and sense of well-being. A partner is not required. Wear soft soled shoes.

FOCUS ON HEALTH WORKSHOPS
Principles of Health Maintenance: Education is knowledge and knowledge is power! These workshops are designed to make you a more powerful health consumer and make knowledgeable decisions concerning your health. (Class taught in Chinese) 

HULA FOR HEALTH
Discover the healthful benefits of Polynesian exercise. Class includes a brief history of the hula, warm-up exercises, basic steps, techniques and choreographed routines. Done in bare feet and casual attire.

LINE MOVEMENT FOR HEALTH
Get fit while you spice up your summer night as you move and gyrate to the country style line movements. It’s simple and easy to learn and will offer cardiovascular conditioning and cross-training for other activities. You don’t need a partner. So mark your calendar for this knee slappin’ exercise time!

LOW IMPACT AEROBICS
Fun and energetic! Great music in a relaxed atmosphere. Get trim and stay in shape with a variety of low impact steps and body sculpting exercises. (Please bring a mat, water, towel and hand weights.)

POWER BALL
"Come have a ball with Lola."  Learn how to work your CORE using the Stability Ball!  The CORE of the body is the foundation to all movement and activity as well as balance.  This class will enhance your strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.  Students must bring their own ball (and weights if needed).

POWER SCULPT
Enjoy a full body muscle conditioning workout to tone, strengthen and firm all muscle groups. Improve fitness, strength and flexibility using bands, mats, and hand held weights. With upbeat music, you will be energized and motivated to keep working out. (*Please bring appropriate hand held weights, 2 lbs. to 8 lbs and towel.)

POWER WALKING
Class focuses on improving cardiovascular fitness and weight loss through power walking. Learn how to walk efficiently and injury free. Taught by exercise physiologist.

SENIOR SPLASH
Students will be able to perform various aerobic skills continuously building cardiovascular strength.  A challenging yet gentler version of Aqua Cardio Fitness.  (No senior discounts)

TAI CHI CHUAN
Tai Chi Chuan is popularly known as the “no sweat” way to improve your physical and mental well-being. This Chinese exercise, when practiced regularly, will harmonize your mental state.

TOTAL BODY WORKOUT
Fun and energetic! A workout that combines cardio kickboxing skills, easy to follow high/low impact steps and body sculpting exercises using hand held weights. All fitness levels are welcome starting with beginning and moving to advanced. Please bring water, mat, towel and hand held weights, 2 pounds to 8 pounds. First come first served.

WATER AEROBICS 
Increase strength, flexibility and endurance while releasing stress, completing a full body workout using water to benefit your life.


Home Economics Home Decorative

BRAZILIAN STITCHERY
A three dimensional form of embroidery using brilliantly colored rayon thread of various weights and textures will be taught. Dimensional flowers, leaves, and background filled with fine growth and flowers will be emphasized. All classes are hands on. Create beautiful heirlooms for your family and friends. Supplies may be purchased in class or from an outside source.

BOBBIN LACE
Learn the ancient art of handmade bobbin lace as it was made before the invention of the machine! Easy to learn. Create small pieces of lace that make perfect gifts.

PERGAMANO (Parchment Paper Craft)
This class will provide you with an opportunity to learn the basic skills in parchment paper craft, its history, and how it can be used as a means of employment either in teaching or sale of the product. Projects you will learn include “Heart in White” greeting card, “Pansy” greeting card, bookmarks, 3-D Angels and boxes.

CERAMICS
Learn and experiment with various ceramic processes. Glaze calculation and techniques of special interest will be offered. Open to those without experience.

STAINED GLASS
Learn the craft of cutting glass, copper foiling, leading and soldering while making stained glass projects. Small kiln available for some glass jewelry or small pieces. Students need to provide tools at a substantial extra cost. Beginning to advanced students welcome. 

BEGINNING FUSING GLASS (Melting Glass)
Creating with melted glass is fun and exciting. Create wonderful works of art from plates, bowls, wall art, trivets and jewelry. Learn techniques of frit, stringer and enamel painting on glass.

OIL PAINTING
For adults who wish to discover and develop creative artistic abilities in the area of oil painting. Students with no previous experience in this area are encouraged to participate. Individualized instruction.

DRAWING
This course is a multi-level class designed for adults who wish to discover and develop creative artistic abilities in the area of drawing. Students with no previous experience in this area are encouraged to participate. 

DECORATIVE PAINTING - (Beginning)
If you’ve never painted before, here it is: Introduction to learn your basic stroke with acrylic paint. Explanation on basic supplies and brushes. A variety of different surfaces will be taught, different texture medium will be incorporated into the painting lessons. Explore the possibilities of creativity from whimsical to formal painting (boutique items to floral strokes). Formerly known as Tole painting.

DECORATIVE PAINTING
Learn the many styles of decorative painting while working on various surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, and fabric. Projects range from beginner to intermediate level and are achieved through blending and stroke work. Basic knowledge of Tole painting preferred. 

PASTEL DRAWING AND WATERCOLOR PAINTING
Experiment and explore pastel drawing and watercolor painting with Lio Cheng Liu. Creating pictures in pen and ink with watercolor or pastels. Basic approach and skills will be taught. Students with no previous experience in this area are encouraged to participate. Individualized instruction. (English/Chinese)

PORTRAIT PAINTING
For experienced portrait painters.  Instruction will include drawing, charcoal, pastels and painting the human form.  Individualized instruction. Prerequisite: Semester of Oil Painting. 

WATERCOLOR PAINTING
Experienced and beginning students will learn creative ways with watercolor. Learn composition, color and design using wet-into-wet and glazing techniques. 

QUILTING/BASIC TECHNIQUES
Learn the basics of patchwork, appliqué and piecing. The class will cover traditional hand techniques as well as modern machine methods. Projects range from full size bed quilts to wall hangings, doll quilts and miniatures. Beginners and advanced quilters welcome.

COMPUTERIZED EMBROIDERY
You will be introduced to the many adjunct machine computer programs available to you for your machine and help to de-mystify the often-confusing computer and sewing machine relationship. Students bring their own machines along with the manual and all power cords and foot controls. Bring machines week 3 of class.

EMBROIDERY SOFTWARE
Do you own embroidery software and have access to a laptop computer? Come join others who want to learn how to effectively use those programs to enhance your embroidery machines. (Students need to be comfortable with basic computer skills and own embroidery software and an embroidery machine that they are familiar with.)

FLORAL ARRANGING
Learn how to use loose flowers to create a hand-tied bouquet, Victorian Tussie Mussies and the art of Topiary with fresh and dried materials, how to dry and press flowers to create projects and holiday arrangements. The instructor has taught her European design techniques at Irvine Valley College for the past 7 years.
($15 weekly material fee) (Enroll in class)

WOODWORKING (BASIC)  
Come and explore the essential principles of woodworking. Topics include wood technology, use of portable power tools and basic machinery. Proper techniques and safety are emphasized. 

HOME DECORATIVE SEWING
Whether a beginner or an advanced sewer this class is for you. Dress up your house with beautiful slipcovers, pillows, window treatments, and endless home accessories. Class demonstrations and techniques in every session. Dressmakers are welcome. (Enroll at any time during the semester). Instructor is bilingual. Certificates of Completion for various levels of sewing difficulty are available. 

FASHION DESIGN SEWING
Fashion design made easy! Learn to sew the latest fashions. Teacher will cover basic to advanced sewing techniques. You will have an opportunity to create your own designer clothes from children to wedding gowns. Maestra habla español.

OVERLOCK/SERGER and SEWING
Sew and Serge Class will lead you through the basics of serging and will help to overcome the fear of changing that dial, so you can move on to using your serger to its limits. Learn threading, adjusting dials, and decorative stitches. After practicing the basics, you will make use of these techniques on garment construction, sewing for the home and more. You may bring your own overlock serger. 

SEWING AND PATTERN ALTERATIONS
Working with beautiful fabrics to create flattering designs is a pleasure all home sewers enjoy. Achieving perfectly fitting clothes can be a challenge. Learn the secret of industrial sewing and pattern alterations. If you are frustrated with store-bought patterns fitting well, get ready to learn some user-friendly techniques. Get a perfect fit with flattering results.

SERGER
Learn step-by-step how to thread, balance and maintain your machine. Enjoy sewing high-fashion techniques while creating great-looking clothes. You can get help with trouble shooting all overlock brands or models.

UPHOLSTERY BASIC TECHNIQUES
APRENDA TAPICERIA (Se habla Espanol) – This class teaches fundamentals of upholstery with a decorator flair. The class includes instruction on frame construction repair, restoration, restyling and fabric selection.

ITALICS/CALLIGRAPHY
Continued studies will be taught to enhance pointed-pen work. Through techniques and experiment, the student will develop a script hand for many beautiful projects. 

CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
Through demonstrating and observing masterpieces, you will learn to paint landscapes, flowers, animal, portraits in various Chinese painting styles.  Master Liu will show you the composition of Chinese painting and different types of brushwork.  come and join the fun!

Home Economics Cooking

BASIC FOOD PREPARATION TECHNIQUES
BEGINNING students will learn how to make 17 different kinds of cakes or cookies in one semester, i.e. Cashew Cookies, Pudding Cake, Imagawa Yaki and Oriental Surprises. INTERMEDIATE students will cover Tea Cookies, Red Bean Cookies, Custard Tarts, Sushi and more. ADVANCED students will learn how to make Coconut Balls, Sesame Cookies, Angel Cake & Water Dumplings. (Taught in Chinese)

CAKE DECORATING & SUGAR ART
Beginning Students will learn the fundamentals of cake decorating including working with rolled fondant. Intermediate and Advanced students will use a variety of decorating techniques to create decorative holiday and special occasion cakes.

CAKE DECORATING & SUGAR ART
BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED COURSE: Apply intermediate and advanced skills while learning new techniques. Emphasis will be placed on icing flowers, embellished borders, air-brushing, side designs, and holiday cakes. (Prerequisite: Completion of beginning course.) 

 

BAKING - PASTRY
A, B, C. . . Apple pie, Breads, Cakes and Cookies, and much more will be introduced in this NEW COURSE. Learn how to make bread dough, and a variety of rolls, pastries, pies, fancy cakes and much more. (A small fee due the first night of class to cover a few basic supplies) 

COOKING AND NUTRITION
A comprehensive cooking and nutrition class designed to provide instructions on creating and preparing meals with very unusual recipes. Limited to 50 students. (Seniors only)

Senior Adult Music Appreciation

PIANO 
Beginning students are welcome! Basic skills, different styles and music theory will be taught to immediate students. Sharps, flats will be introduced according to individual’s level. Keyboards are provided for classroom use. (Taught in Korean)

PERCUSSIONS
Come join the fun with percussion instruments. You will learn how to play Marcas, Guiro, Claves, triangles, shakers, Congas and Bongos in no time. Learn the basic fundamentals of these instruments and play the ensemble pieces accompanied with music or participate in the recital concert. Students must furnish their own instruments and music stand.

UKULELE
A beginning and intermediate course in Hawaiian, Tin Pan Alley and other songs and styles up to today. Basic music theory, vamps, and transposition will be included. Students may use any type of ukulele and must furnish their own instrument. The emphasis will be on singing and playing. Singers and guitarists are also welcome.

RECORDER 
A beginning class in learning to play the soprano or alto recorder. Students will learn to read and play music from the 1400’s to today. Solo and ensemble playing. Other parts are available for keyboard of classical guitar. No experience necessary. Students must furnish instrument.

BEADING (BASIC TECHNIQUES)
Learn to design and construct professional quality jewelry using one and two needles. The art of knotted strands will be taught. Look in your jewelry box – you may have pieces that you want to redesign or repair. Enrollment is limited to the first 25 students.

WIRE WRAPPED JEWELRY
Want to learn how to make your own jewelry without having to use a torch and solder? Learn to use pliers, beads and wire to form great looking necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets. Impress your friends with your beautiful custom jewelry while saving money at the same time. Come join the fun with Mona!

BEAD DAZZLE HANDCRAFTS
Come and join the fun and celebrate the seasonal changes with handcrafted bead dazzle projects. This class will focus on various applications of beadwork with all types of materials. You will take the projects with you: beaded leather pouch, dimensional beaded rose, bracelets, trinket box, high fiber donut, native American choker necklace, beaded book markers, coasters, and much more.

COMMUNITY CHORUS
Music lovers of all skill levels are welcome. You will be introduced to basic music notes, rhythms, and simple music theory Learn sight reading skills and vocal music techniques. With these skills you will practice singing ina choir group to attain musical harmony and artistic elegance.

 

COMPUTER ENRICHMENT FOR SENIORS
Understanding Technology: Are you looking for a class to enrich your life and provide a background in technology topics? This class is an introduction to the historical development of the technology around us. We will also explore the impact of the computer on our everyday living. Both demonstrations and local field trips will be provided. 

COMPUTER ENRICHMENT WORKSHOPS FOR SENIORS
Using Technology: Are you thinking about buying a computer? Do you have a computer but don’t use it? This class is a hands-on introduction to computers as they are used in everyday living. You will learn how to use a computer to help you enrich your life. Topics include: computer applications, the Internet and email. Class meets once a week. Note: It is recommended that both the Computer Class described above and this Computer Workshop be taken together for a complete introduction to computers.

Welcome to a class where you will learn all the many fascinating aspects of our beautiful world. 

LIFE STORIES
Oral and written communication: Class is designed to develop effective communication and leadership skills in today’s adults. Overcome the fear of public speaking in a safe, fun, and cooperative environment through creative activities and games to develop your confidence and public speaking. PUBLIC SPEAKING (FUN AND FRIENDLY) 
Oral and written communication: Class is designed to develop effective communication and leadership skills in today’s adults. Overcome the fear of public speaking in a safe, fun, and cooperative environment through creative activities and games to develop your confidence and public speaking. PIANO/ORGAN/KEYBOARD (Beginning/Intermediate)
Beginning Class A combination class for the very beginning student and also for the student who has basic level note reading and rhythmic ability in C, and middle C positions and is familiar with sharps and flats. Show tunes, pop and classical styles will be taught. Limited number of keyboards are provided for classroom use. 
Intermediate Class for students who can play some scales and play the keys C, G, D, F. Practice will be given in more advanced rhythm patterns. Explore pop, classical, blues and learn about the great composers. Limited number of keyboards provided for classroom use. 

PIANO/ORGAN/KEYBOARD (Beginning/Intermediate)
These are combination classes including the material from above. For the beginning and intermediate student. 

GUITAR (Beginning/Intermediate) 
Beginning Class: Emphasis will be on chords and strumming. This course will cover many of the basic guitar styles including pop, country and finger style. Students furnish their own instrument.
Intermediate Class includes: strums, finger picking, arpeggios, tablature, blues, bar chords, transposition and bass runs. Students must furnish instrument. Performance and teaching opportunities will be available for students who are interested. (Designed for Seniors only) 

GUITAR
Beginning and Intermediate Class will emphasize chords and strumming. This course will cover many of the basic guitar styles including pop, country and some finger styles. The intermediate portion includes strums, finger picking, arpeggios, tablature, blues, bar chords, transposition, bass runs and blues. Students must furnish their own instrument.

SINGING 
Learn to sing and enjoy songs from a variety of countries. Pronunciation and lyrics will be explained in class. Songs from musicals, American folk music, old pop tunes, gospels and movie showings will be taught. Sign up and join the fun! (Taught in Korean)

THE JOY OF SINGING AND KARAOKE TECHNIQUE
Learn to sing and enjoy songs from a variety of countries. Pronunciation and lyrics will be explained in class. Songs from musicals, American folk music, old pop tunes, gospels and movie showings will be taught. Sign up and join the fun!
