Whites were envious of Native people's prosperity and the young United States government passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, which resulted in the forced migration of thousands of Native Americans to the "Indian territory" (modern-day Oklahoma). For example, in 1838, US soldiers marched Cherokees 1,000 miles to Oklahoma. The Seminoles hid in the Everglades for years until surrounded and forced to give up.

Native peoples forced west of the Mississippi River. Buffaloes killed for hides, paid for by the government, and for sport. Their population reduced from 60 million to 1,000.

Attacks by Natives on people who trespassed on their lands led to the building of forts. Treaties signed in1851 and 1868 for food and reservations did not last. Apache fought on in the South West. US general order all Apaches killed, and the Navahos were killed in the canyons.

Reservation lands were poor, and Native peoples could not hunt or farm in the old way food was scarce. In desperation, Sioux attacked settlers and killed 450 whites in Iowa, Minnesota and Dakotas. Over 300 Sioux were tried and convicted, and 38 were executed.

Atrocities committed on both sides. In 1864, 150 innocent killed and mutilated in Sand Creek, Colorado. In 1874, thousands of gold seekers moved to South Dakota. Natives were ordered to move to reservations and killed if they refused. In the Battle of the Little Big Horn, 260 US soldiers were killed, which marked the beginning of the end for Native resistance.

Government sent soldiers to remove all Natives from the Plains to reservations. In the 1880s, the Ghost Dance was performed on reservations in the Plains to bring back dead relatives. One group of 350 Sioux left a reservation, and 240 were killed at Wounded Knee, South Dakota.
