Students learn and progress at their own pace, completing
coursework and earning credit whenever all assignments are finished. All work
is completed in the classroom. No homework is assigned. Computers and videos supplement the textbooks and written assignments. Instructors and paraeducators provide individualized help, clarify assignments, answer questions, and
monitor student progress. The courses are tailored to match each student’s skill
level. Students attend whenever their schedules permit. |
In Independent Study, students needing a
high school diploma complete most of their coursework at home, meeting once a
week with a certificated teacher. Independent Study is not an option for
students who want to earn a GED or who want to audit. There is a minimum reading level requirement to qualify for the
program. Also, a $40 book deposit is required for Independent Study, because
you take school materials home. At their weekly appointments, Independent Study students
submit completed work, discuss questions with their instructor, and review
grades from the last assignment. They might also take a test,
view a video, or complete computer modules. The appointments last about
20 minutes, but homework requires an average of 15-25 hours per week. Each
five-credit course usually takes a minimum of three weeks to complete. |

California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)
All adult students who complete their diploma requirements are required to pass the CAHSEE before they can receive a high school diploma. This is a state test covering English and math. The CAHSEE is given only four times a year. You may begin taking it as soon as you have 90 credits toward graduation, and adults may take it as many times as needed to pass, but only three times in one school year. This year it will be offered July 29, 2008 and July 30, 2008 at 8:30am in room E4. The tests must be ordered, so please plan ahead. Please contact Krista Stenzel at 562-926-6734, x25019 to sign up for any of this year’s test dates (at least a month before the test date). Please do not put off taking this test; we want you to be able to graduate as soon as your credits are completed. |

GED Information The GED Test The GED is a federal test designed to measure the skills and concepts usually learned during four years of high school. Many employers consider it the equivalent of a high school diploma. Community colleges also accept the GED in lieu of a diploma. If you pass the GED and still desire a high school diploma, ABC Adult School will waive 45 elective credits. The GED Exam is made up of five separate tests: Language Arts Writing, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts Reading, and Mathematics. Most questions are multiple choice. Part of the Writing test requires an essay, and some Mathematics questions are “fill in the blanks.” The five tests are taken over a two-week period. To pass, you need a total score of 2250 points, a minimum score of 410 points per test, and an overall average score of 450 per test. ABC Adult School administers the new version of the GED test, which was introduced in January, 2002. Those taking the GED for the first time must pre-register at the Adult School office on Cuesta Drive (see map in back of brochure). The registration fee is $90.00 for all five tests (cash, money order, or cashier’s check) – no personal checks, please. The fee includes the GED certificate. The fee to re-take a previously failed test is $10 per test if registered through ABC Adult School. Students needing to make up tests taken at another site must pay the $90.00 registration fee. All five tests must be completed within the same calendar year. Examinees must be at least 18 years of age. Photo I.D. is required. GED
Preparation Students who believe they need some preparation before attempting the test should first enroll in the adult school office. GED Preparation is offered in the Learning Center (room E-4 on the Cuesta campus). At the Learning Center, students are tested to determine readiness and assigned a course of study based on identified needs. Preparation is available for reading comprehension, grammar and usage, essay writing, and mathematics. When students complete their course of study, they can try the GED Practice test, which is free and indicates the likelihood of passing the real test. Counseling Hours
